sklogo1.gif (2182 bytes) Finnish School of New England was founded in the spring of
1991 serving the greater Boston area.

The purpose of the school is to:
1. teach and perpetuate the Finnish language,
2. provide information about Finland and Finnish culture,
3. maintain Finnish traditions among Finns living in the
    New England area.

The language classes meet generally on Saturdays twice a month in Greater Boston area. During
the two hour school day, Finnish is the language of choice in children's classes. Christmas and
Spring Parties wrap up the fall and spring semesters. Omppu is the official paper of the School.

PLAY GROUP (2 - 3 yrs)
The young children learn Finnish songs, circle games and arts and crafts in a familiar setting
accompanied by parents.

PRESCHOOL ( 3 - 5 yrs)
The children in preschool age are taught new and old Finnish group plays and songs that are an
essential part in building up the vocabulary. The themes for craft workshops follows those of
Finnish holidays.

SCHOOL AGED ( 6 - 11 yrs)
School aged children are taught reading and writing in Finnish. Popular plays, stories and word
games encourage everyone to participate. The students work in two separate classes according
to the age and language skills.

TEEN AGED (12 - 17 )
Interesting monthly themes bring together teen agers who have a change to meet old and new
friends and spend an evening learning new skills and practice Finnish language. 

ADULTS
Adult classes concentrate on grammatical and discussion skills. Current events and news
from Finland are discussed in the group.


The operation of the school depends largely on voluntary activity. In addition, the Ministry of
Education of Finland, and both Finnish and American companies and organizations support
Suomi koulu with donations.
